About

Welcome to The Energetic Foodie blog! My name is Carolyn. I'm a mid 20’s marketing specialist by day, gymnastics coach by night and foodie in between; self-motivated, optimist, giver of encouragement and always hungry. Currently I live in the Philly suburbs where I cook mostly for myself and my husband.

About the Blog
The idea for my blog came after I self-healed my stomach issues through diet. I've always been told I have a lot of energy and after all food is energy - so the blog was born. I post clean eating healthy recipes, cooking how-to’s, and dieting guidelines that are simple for busy working people like me. Most recipes are plant based, some vegetarian but not all. I also try to focus oh budget conscious meals. You'll see prices noted on every recipe.  I hope this forum helps you on your journey to healthy eating.

I believe that for most of us, taking small steps to change is better than trying to meet an un-achievable goal. In general I try to live by the 80/20 rule 80% of the time I make healthy food choices and 20% of the time I’m not perfect. We are all human!

Background
Growing up a dairy farmer's daughter in rural Pennsylvania I know a few things about eating healthy. My mother in particular helped shape my health awareness from a young age. She was way ahead of the “organic” trend, as she prepared homemade pizza weekly (yes, she made the dough), the garden was full and things like Kraft Macaroni weren't in my vocabulary.

My parents farm in Newville, PA.

The Diet That Motivated Me - Standard Process
I decided to go on a diet - but what diet?! That was the problem. I was feeling overwhelmed reading several diet plans and programs so I asked friends and family for advice and a co-worker (shout-out to Danielle!) recommend I check out the Standard Process 21 Day Purification Diet. While intense, the basis of the program was simple: all of nature’s delicious whole foods. You can read more about the diet in my post here. Part diet, part cleanse, the plan eliminates meat, wheat, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, and it goes without saying, no processed food or preservatives. Say what?! Is that even possible? Yes, it was possible and yes it was hard, but the results made it worth the journey.
After the first week I felt a major difference in my energy level, the scale went down and my stomach issues were eliminated. These results grew exponentially as the weeks went on. Since going off the diet I've continued to eat similarly and have been feeling great.

I hope that my blog helps you uncover ways in your life you can apply small change that help you make progress toward a healthy eating. God bless you on your journey.

  1. I admire your determination to get on a healthy track. I've had many, many warning signs and angels coming to me through people, telling me it's time to make diet changes. I think I have an ulcer and I'm very, very borderline diabetic. But it's so hard, comfort food, alcohol, coffee these are the loves of my life. In fact, I wish my foodie posts really expressed my deep appreciation for eating.

I'm also always out covering food events, so it's hard to stay on track. At my daygig I'm in charge of ordering catering to entertain clients which is several times a week, so we have a lot of food on site, all the time, and lots of leftovers. I tried once to order from Fuel and everyone hated it! They told me never again. Most of the salads & fruit I order get thrown away. My bosses and visitors want something fun to eat, and I have no will power, even if I've brought my own lunch, I wind up eating the catered goodies.

Anyway, I look forward to following your blog and hope you'll do the same. And I was serious about you writing a guest post, it can be a restaurant review or a recipe type post or something more personal about your process.

Look forward to meeting you at PHLBloggers event!

  2. Hi Le Ann,
I loved reading your post. What you described is what so many people tell me they struggle with. Myself included - when I got my first job we had a catered lunch everyday for $4! How can you pass that up! Slowly I started to feel the effects of poor eating. I tried exercising it away. That helped but didn't fix the problems I was having. I think the key is self motivation. You have to be strong and tell yourself you can do it, over and over. You also have to have a basis of support around you (which might be hard at work). Lastly you need to eat! Don't starve yourself. Find foods you love that are healthy. For me I've added alot of avocados, lentils and kale to my diet. Temptations are always around but if you have food in your arsenal that you love, the temptations lessen. And lets be honest NO ONE is perfect. I'd be happy to share some other tips with you.

Keep checking back for more recipes and I'll be in touch about a post :)
